EIGHTEENTH APEC TRANSPORTATION WORKING GROUP

AGENDA ITEM: Progress Report on Pilot Electronic Commerce Training in Maritime Transport
Australia
Background
At its 15th meeting in April 1999 the TPT-WG endorsed the Australian proposal Pilot Electronic Commerce Training in Maritime Transport and final funding approval for funding of US$ 49,150 from the TILF account was given by the BMC in July 1999.
The successful consultant for this project was selected in August 2000. At the time of writing this report (15 September) it was expected that the APEC Secretariat would sign the contract with Carley Corporation, Orlando, Florida, USA before TPT-WG 18.
TPT-WG members are encouraged to confirm participation in this project as soon as possible by nominating a local coordinator. Participating organisations can be nominated later. However, the consultant will begin research shortly and can tailor the course content only to the needs of organisations which have been nominated at an early stage.
The role of local coordinators will be to identify participating organisations in their economy. Local coordinators will also serve as a point of contact for the consultant to identify training needs in their economy and to establish contact with the participants.
The project will deliver electronic commerce training to the transport industry. Businesses and government organisations concerned with all modes of transport (sea, air, road and rail) are encouraged to participate.
The training course will be delivered approximately from March to June 2001. It will be delivered online over the Internet. There will be no travel costs for participants and they can learn at their own pace without having to spend time away from their workplace. Participants will need to have access to a PC or Macintosh Computer (preferably Pentium or equivalent).
So far New Zealand and Hong Kong, China have confirmed participation.
A dedicated web site will be set up in the next few weeks to share information regarding this project. It will be linked to the TPT-WG web site (http://www.iot.gov.tw/apec_tptwg).
Please do not hesitate to contact the project manager Dr Frank K Mueller (phone: +61 2 6274 6235, fax: +61 2 6274 7744, email: frank.mueller@dotrs.gov.au) if you have any further questions.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the above progress report be noted and that economies advise Australia as soon as possible if they are interested to participate in the project.
