TRANSPORTATION WORKING GROUP AGENDA ITEM 11: EXPERTS GROUP ON MARITIME SAFETY PROGRESS REPORT ON THE PROJECT "SAFER SHIPPING IN THE ASIA PACIFIC REGION AN INTEGRATED APPROACH" (TPT 03-99) Australia Safer Shipping Project This project was proposed by Australia in 1997 and was endorsed by the TPT-WG in April 1998. Funding approval was obtained in July 1998 and endorsed by Ministers in November 1998. The objective of the project is to identify the legislative, economic, or commercial mechanisms that can be used in APEC economies to encourage all players in the international maritime industry to support a safety culture and the use of quality safe shipping. The project Steering Committee, established at the Experts Group on Maritime Safety (EGMS) in Seoul, selected the Asia Pacific Maritime Institute (APMI) Pty Ltd as the preferred tenderer in March 1999. Current Status APMI Pty Ltd, which is based in Launceston Australia, commenced Phase 1 of the Safer Shipping Project in April 1999. Initially a literature review was conducted to provide background information for the study. This exploratory research of secondary data enabled APMI to develop a questionnaire which was forwarded to APEC economies targeted by the study. To encourage participation, the survey questionnaire was modified for internet use and posted on the APMI website. Personal interviews with many of the APEC economies were also conducted. The collection of data has been completed and APMI are currently finalising the data analysis. The draft report of findings was submitted to the Project Steering Committee at the beginning of November 1999.
