PROGRESS REPORT OF ROAD SAFETY EXPERTS GROUP

1. There is no Road Transport Safety Experts Group Meeting held in the 16th APEC TPT-WG Meeting.

Progress since the 15th APEC TPT-WG Meeting

2. The questionnaire for the twelve major road transportation safety problems were revised according to the suggestion and comments of the experts provided in the last meeting in Santiago, Chile and during the inter-session circulation. The finalized questionnaire had been sent to all APEC Member economies and the experts on 1 August 1999. To date, the replies to the questionnaire are received from 9 member economies, including Canada; Japan; Republic of Korea; Mexico; New Zealand; Papua New Guinea; Singapore; Chinese Taipei; and Thailand.

3. The draft report for analyzing the current road safety situation and accident data format of APEC Member economies is continuously progressing.

4. After the Lead Shepherd consulted all APEC Member economies, Chinese Taipei invited the World Bank and Asian Development Bank officials to make presentations in the Road Safety Experts Group meeting. However, they can not make it at this time and look forward to a future opportunity (see attached letter).

Recommendations

5. Members invite representatives of the World Bank and Asian Development Bank to make presentations about the Global Road Safety Partnership at the 17th APEC TPT-WG meeting in Singapore, March 27-31, 2000.

6. Members note to reply the questionnaire of the twelve major road safety problems.

7. Members note the progress of the Road Safety Experts Group.
