PROGRESS REPORT OF ROAD SAFETY EXPERTS GROUP

Progress since the 17th APEC TPT-WG meeting

1. The draft reports for Phase I Questionnaire and the twelve major road transportation safety problems have been modified and summarized according to the comments from APEC Member economies.

2. The draft report to the next APEC Transport Ministerial meeting, entitled ¡¥Report of Road Safety Issues in the APEC Region¡¦, has been circulated to all APEC Member Economies for seeking comments.

Summary of Discussion

3. There were 11 experts from 7 APEC Member economies (including Brunei Darussalam; Canada; People¡¦ s Republic of China; Japan; Republic of Korea; Republic of the Philippines; Chinese Taipei) participating in the meeting.

4. In the discussion of the Report of Road Safety Issues in the APEC Region, experts suggest that recommendations to the ministers could be added in the report.

5. Experts also suggest to request more data from APEC Member economies for analyzing the current issues of road safety in the APEC region. In addition, Member economies may provide their own status and/or issues in order to emphasize the importance of road safety.

6. For the future works of Road Safety Experts Group (RSEG), experts discussed several practical tasks and directions.

7. In a short term, RSEG could focus on the identified twelve major road safety problems, especially sharing the methodology and technology of low cost-high return measures and the experiences and results of implementing the measures through workshops so that Member economies could implement the measures to improve road safety in the region.

8. RSEG could also cooperate with other organizations, such as motor vehicle manufactures, providers of drug testing equipment and traffic safety facilities, and so on.

9. There were some funds from the World Bank (WB) and Asian Development Bank (ADB) supporting APEC Member economies to improve their road safety. RSEG could also cooperate with the WB and ADB to enhance road safety in the Asia-Pacific region.

10. Chinese Taipei will modify the draft Report of Road Safety Issues in the APEC Region according to the suggestions and comments of the experts, and circulate it to all APEC Member economies for seeking comments. The draft report will be reviewed and finalized at the 19th TPT-WG meeting in Brunei Darussalam.

11. Japan distributed the information of the First GRSP ASEAN Seminar. It will be held in Tokyo, Japan on 26-28 March 2001. All APEC Member economies are welcome to participate.

12. All APEC Member economies are encouraged to consider the chairing of the Road Safety Experts Group.

13. Members are encouraged to participate in the First GRSP ASEAN Seminar in Tokyo, Japan on 26-28 March 2001.

14. Members note the progress of RSEG.
